Why do German hotels and many other places in the country give free apples?

Recommended Posts

In the case of fresh food, such as grapes, I agree. Sell by/eat by dates are a complete waste of time.

If it hasn't started to go off, then I will eat it. If it is going mouldy, then I will either throw it away or just cut off the moldy bits and eat the rest.

those dates annoy me, the other halfs forever trying to throw things out telling me there out of date, nothing wrong with the stuff apart from a date set by someone

told him unless it smells funny or is growing new stuff on it then it will be fine

You think that's bad, I was shopping in a certain "freezer center" and noticed a staff member removing all the boxes of grapes from the shelves. I asked if she was going to reduce the price of them, but she said they'd got tomorrows best before date on them and they were going in the bin.

As they looked to be in better condition than some I'd bought from other places recently I asked about the chances of getting some out of the bins, but apparently they put disinfectant or bleach on them to discourage that sort of thing.

Oh Steptoad! You know I am useless with money and bargains but I have a massive bee in my bonnet about wasting food.

I do not get either that hotels are not allowed to give their scraps to chickens, pigs, etc.

And they put bleach on them? So what would have made great fertilizer is now, well, toxic? This world is insane.

Do you mean give away as in placing them in your room, if so I think it’s a nice little touch, better than some of the daft little toiletries that are free?

No. I mean...

Most have them on the desk at reception when you check-in/out.

And in the Eurovision Song Contest press centre there were trollies of free apples.
