A burglar has been stabbed to death and the householder arrested on suspicion of murder after an attempted break-in at his house in Salford.

PHUKET: A man who tried to steal a large pig was shot dead by a pig farmer on Phuket on Monday afternoon, say police....

.... The other men fled. Police do not anticipate they will re-offend in a hurry. The farmer is not expecting to be charged.

So who has it right?

I'm voting to give the Manchester bloke a medal for public service.

me too....won't be robbing no more houses....fancy doing it on your own door step in salford...mind you his three mates are still at large....so called mates because they left him to die....

Perhaps its a Manchester thing that they do these things with their friends, but the fact that there was a group perhaps suggests that this was something more than just a simple burglary.

Either way, the incident is quite rightly being investigated by the police. If the CPS feel that the occupants response was unwarranted they will press charges and the matter will be tested in front of a jury. Which is the correct and proper way for things to happen.

Spot on. At first I was all for the stabbers, but there is much more to this than has been reported so far.

Four heavily tooled up masked men targeted this house for a specific reason.

vigilanteism is widespread throughout south east Asia and it is not infrequent for suspected criminals to be executed by a mob.

this example seems quite clear cut, but you shouldn't forget that it is by no means always certain that the executed guy is always guilty, though whenever this comes up on internet forums, the people defending the notion of mob rule or vigilante justice always assume that they are. Sometimes, the wrong person is going to be labelled the criminal, in the confusion the real criminal melts into the crowd and gets away. Once 50 people have got it into their heads that someone is guilty and start to kick and beat them to death, it's too late.

I think allowing the use of reasonable force is the right policy to have. If someone is in your house and you stab them while they are trying to attack you then fair enough. If you shoot them in the head as they run off down your drive then that is probably a bit too far.
