Since we don't yet know how the burglar came to die, and you have provided no details on the circumstances in which the pig thief was shot, it's impossible to compare. If someone is in your house and you stab them while they are trying to attack you then fair enough. If you shoot them in the head as they run off down your drive then that is probably a bit too far. If he's been stabbed once, and bled to death, there will be no charges. If he's been stabbed 27 times while lying helpless on the ground, there will be a murder conviction - as there was the last time that happened. Murdering a scumbag is still a crime.
