hugh jarse
it's the debt ridden society that the banks have encouraged so that even football teams run their businesses in the red like all the rest...making most businesses when in default owned by the them. rickiethecat
Are people so thick that they think just because a handful of players at the top get paid silly money that all footballers are millionaires? The majority of professional footballers at lower league level get paid little more than the average office worker.
taylor1986
what about the risk of injury? broken bones which could end careers? granted most will probably retire at 28 or something but surly there must be a element of worry in each players mind everytime they step out on the field? I wonder if they can still claim compensation for injuries in the workplace too?

All emergency services staff face that sort of worry every day. Nurses..doctors...surgeons....if they get something wrong, not only do they cost someone else their life but it doesn't turn out so well for them either. And then you've got the armed forces. Rugby players face much more risk every time they play a game but their wages don't rival that of football players.
rickiethecat
Rugby players face much more risk every time they play a game but their wages don't rival that of football players. That's because no-one cares about minority sports like rugby. You might just as well complain that chess players don't get paid as much as footballers. HeadingNorth
A lot less people care about football than you may think... I don't know what he thinks, but several millions watch the matches, it is by far and away the most popular sport in Britain, and there seems to be no upper limit on how much people are willing to pay to watch it. rickiethecat
Why all the jealousy anyway? It's not like the taxpayer is funding footballer's wages. If you think Man Utd for example are paying their players too much then stop supporting Man Utd!
