Council should let you vote on possible tenants

Recommended Posts

I think it would be a good idea that when a council property becomes empty all the residents on the road, Maybe 5 up and 5 down from the empty property should be allowed to have a brief meeting with the possible "new tenants", tell them what the road is like, I.e quiet, friendly and what behaviour wouldnt be tolerated from them, And then let the tenants vote on who they want to receive the tenancy on the property. This is because our road was always quiet and lovely, theres not many council properties left on here, we are private, The council have given a home to a family who are always shouting, swearing and arguing , anything from 7am to 10 pm, niether of them work so dont consider anyone who does, they have 4 children who shout and swear also, they are what would be considered scum! Some neighbours have had a quiet word with them and explained that noise in the garden carries a long way and that everyone can hear her swearing but to no avail. So point being if we could have met them first and voted they would never have got on here

Totally agree, what a good post, well done.

There is always going to be problems amongst those on benefits that choose to display anti social behaviour as they fear no financial recourse. This makes it difficult for those living around them especially for private owners who are made to suffer. I do think you have a point but it won't happen.

Politics makes anything possible.

The council most likely had a responsibility to house this family because of their children. As your neighbours have already had a quiet word and been ignored, you all need to complain to the landlords, telling them about the anti social behaviour of these tenants. Most social landlords have specialist staff who deal with those sorts of problems. Its possible you may have to keep detailed records before anything gets done.

We can all be unfortunate in the neighbours we get, but (for obvious reasons) there are more likely to be problems with neighbours in social housing, anyone buying an ex-council house should really be aware of this.

Those houses on your road should not have been allowed to be bought from the council in the first place.

That aside; from my experience anyone owning their property ALWAYS looks down on people living on their road that rent, privately or from the council. It's damn right snobbery and doesn't make you any better and contrary to popular belief, doesn't mean you have more money than they do.

As for what you suggest; why should you have a say in what the council do with their own properties? you don't, and never will.

Too true, my old neighbour had bought their property, and she was (In her own imagination) so much better than any of the rest of us. I'm surprised she could see anything, at all, seeing as she spent so much time looking down her nose at the ordinary rent-wallahs around her!

Anyone would have thought she was Landed gentry! Talk about "My trumps smell of lavender!"

Yes bluevan, how dare you wish for quiet and courteous neighbours. You are such a snob for wanting to rid your road of anti social behaviour. You private owners with your holier than thou attitudes and desires for a generally nice carry on really get on my nerves.

What's Snobish about wanting a bit of peace and quite where you live, irrespective of whether you are a tenant or home owner ?

Perhaps FACEBOOK you haven't experienced anti social behaviour where you live OR is it

that you yourself contribute to upsetting neighbours and undertake in anti social behaviour ?

I personally think that Sheffield City Council should vet Familey's before putting them in a nice neighbourhood........what they ought to do, is have an estate designated where all the rapist, druggies, muggers can live together !
