Why are drum lessons so expensive??

I suppose a question to ask the OP would be: if you called out a plumber to your house for an hour, what would it cost you? Assuming you work / study in the day, how much would calling out a plumber in the evening cost you?

Please don't forget that professional musicians are just that - professionals. If you're getting a good tutor who works hard then you should expect to pay, just the same as hiring any professional. Also, its worth mentioning - I'm an instrument tutor, and for each lesson I teach I will normally put at least as much time in beforehand in preparation. Then consider the costs (books, instrument maintenance, transport) and really, the price of private lessons makes more sense.

£25 an hour for instrument tuition is perfectly reasonable. What's a car mechanic's hourly rate? It's a specialist skilled job which requires years of dedicated training and practice, not to mention all the prep work. That's the price, nobody's forcing you to learn drums!!

Hi,

Just wanted to express my frustration about the cost of wanting to learn the drums.

A phone call to 2 different drum tuition schools had pretty much the same result with relation to a 1 hr 1-2-1 lesson.

£25 p/h !!!!!!!!

No wonder kids are hanging around on streets getting drunk.

So does anyone know a tutor who charges less??

cheers

£25ph is cheap mate! I charge £60ph!

Think about it. Drum lessons are mainly an after school thing. A tutor can fit in 1 or 2 lessons a night at these times.

Another reason why they are so expensive:

I like to see drummers develop their own style. You can't develop a style if you are having weekly lessons. I only teach for a couple of weeks, then give the pupil as much material and music to go through as possible. When they have hit the wall and feel like they need more lessons, they come back again, usually months later.

What exactly is your problem here?

You want professional advice on how to play the drums yeah?

You ask a professional who's expert at what he teaches ... yeah?

You then seem to be outraged at £25 p/h for 1-2-1 tuition! :loopy:

How much do you think they should charge to your way of thinking ... minimum wage?

Although I normally say (flippantly) that drumming is just hitting some stretched skin with a stick ... I realise there's a lot more to it than that!

you pay for the expertise, otherwise there's no point going for lessons at all!

Well said - Looking at all the replies, no wonder I found it very difficult to build up a viable Piano Teaching practice. Why do people resent lesson prices when they'll pay a plumber/electrician/other expert 3 times that to fix something. All skilled professions in their own right, so why do the music teachers/musicians get such a hard time over their prices. I never did get that.

Oooh! ... forgot to say in my previous post.

I'd happily pay £25ph if someone could come round and show me how to do links on my computer! (I can make words go blue ... that's all!)

It's the bane of my life! :gag:

If anyone wants £25 (I guess it'll take less than an hour) and can get to Crookes to show me, I'll even throw in one of my own special ice creams! :D

(this is a serious proposition!)

Since 1984 Rick Allen has given lessons half price.

Links? What sort of links? here? Ask people for free.

Explain what it is in more detail then I'll come and show you - just for a taste of that Baileys icecream.

I just want to know how to do links (are they called hyperlinks?) like most other people seem to be able to do on here. :(

Hmmm. Its' a html code...when i figure out which one, I'll post it. Not sure if I can just try here and say 'Ooops...testing'.... but if I tried often enough, I'd find it. I used to have an ebay me page and the principle's the same - it's finding out which code works.
