Feedback on the Wedding Group

Recommended Posts

I'd like to see the dress megathread be closed and allow every bride her own dress thread - in the spirit of the group - every bride is supposed to feel special, and since the creation of the megathread the group seems quieter, and it's difficult to follow any dress advice (or to get replies to questions) at peak wedding season as there are so many threads all running at once within one thread

When the sticky was first formed it was because the group was overrun with dress talk which suffocated all other threads. I'd rather leave it there for the time being but if any further threads pop up we'll leave them in the main discussion area and monitor the situation.

I also don't like the venue megathread for similar reasons. I'd concede to a sheffield venue megathread (though that still falls short on the same points as above), but people asking questions about specialist venues or locations just get lost in the 'noise' too

It is a Sheffield venue megathread already. I spent ages a month ago trimming it so that all venues are mentioned pretty much only once, getting rid of as many 'I suggest you go to so and so venue' which added no particular value. During the busy season many venue discussions have been left without being merged. Once again, I'd rather leave the venues sticky at the top but if specific ones do crop up then perhaps they can be built on. We'll only merge venue discussions to the megathread where necessary from now on, i.e. if it isn't a specific question, if a variety of venues form their own threads then I'll dissolve the venue sticky. Venues not in Sheffield or in the immediate vicinity have no place on Sheffield Forum.

Please do keep your suggestions coming, it's good to get new ideas and we'll act on them where possible.

alot of threads are old. so when another gets started it gets closed due to there already being a thread started. Whether its old or not. Also when there is a thread with millions of pages on no one wants to sit and scroll thru every page to find what they are looking for

Thanks CR - that all looks positive - except for this bit:

Venues not in Sheffield or in the immediate vicinity have no place on Sheffield Forum.

Now that can't possibly be true. The whole of the rest of the forum discusses the rest of the world, and inevitably there will be brides in Sheffield who want to marry abroad/in Scotland/on a beach, and there are no forum rules (to the best of my knowledge) preventing them from discussing this

The dresses topic is a messy one I suppose. Perhaps the recurring question of 'larger sizes' or 'black/red/coloured' dresses could be merged in separate threads. The problem with merging on an ongoing basis in a field such as this and especially during a recession is that information in a thread can easily become out of date if it is maintained season after season. That's a tough one

That's the nature of the Forum. We always ask for people to search for the subject before starting a thread that's already out there to avoid repetition. This is common throughout the while site and will not change.

But when your looking for a service and it comes up with a 2006 thread. I dont find this at all very useful as its way out of date and things will more than likely have changed. Therefore not getting what your looking for

I agree with this although there are several recent remarks near the end. It has been regularly updated since it was started. When I get some time I will trim some of the older posts from it.

There's a thread for getting married abroad and a few running on locations near to Sheffield.

To start splitting up individual posts from a large thread is a time consuming.g and administrative pain. There are various threads running about different wedding dress themes. Sometimes they are a couple of years old but the advice still relevant.

How about having a post at the beginning of the thread explaining this. I can see why people lose interest in a services thread from 5 years ago, but if it is explained in the first post that actually this holds all the information in date order from the last 5 years about .. say.. hair and make up then this can help. Some of the threads that have become megathreads (across groups) appear at first to be personal threads for the OP when actually they cover loads of questions. I suppose it can be difficult for the user to find anything useful.

I did this with a couple of threads in the Healthy living group and it seems to work ok although I did have to use a very round about method, PM me if you want to know how.

Is it possible to have a thread for people who are looking for recommendations, titled for each month, then at the end of the month that thread can be closed or even deleted. Like you say, some info becomes out of date but turns up in searches. By deleting it you could avoid that. So maybe all posts for "can anyone recommend" or "im looking for" can go in that thread, and people can put themselves forward only in that thread. It is a bit counter-productive if you can't reply to someones needs if you've got the goods.

I can see how this would help, as less people would lose interest if they knew to skip straight to the last couple of pages for the latest posts.
