Nagel
Pear Cider, what's that all about? Surely cider can only be made from apples and the equivalent drink made from pears is Perry?
Chris_Sleeps
Oz Clarke explained a difference on TV once, but I've forgotten what he said. It's disputed though, and the discussion pages of wikipedia tell us two things: Weighing into the discussion, Perry is a type of pear cider made from specific types of pear. Pear cider is only perry if it is made from perry pears. See: http://www.ukcider.co.uk/wiki/index.php/Perry_Pears Respectfully, I think the user [above] has misinterpreted the webpage he or she cites. I know of nothing in the literature which says that a drink fermented from pears other than perry pears is not perry. Meanwhile, it is the assessment of CAMRA that perry and pear cider are simply different names for the same drink
alchresearch
I think it had something to do with cider made with apples being originally called "Apple Cider" but as apples became the leading fruit used, they just dropped the "apple" bit and called it plain "cider". A bit like "hoover" relating to all vac cleaners.
