chem1st
Shouldn't we have public transport vouchers? For a couple of hours work a week in your community, you'd get free travel for the week. The OAP and disabled, and most children up to 5, some up to 16, already have free travel (albeit it time constricted at times). For workers on a low income, or the unemployed, the cost of travel can be highly restrictive. We have privatised companies, that receive a hell of a lot of subsidies from the public purse via grants for free fares, helping companies purchase new stock, highway maintenance etc. Community work for travel vouchers would be an easy way to strengthen community ties, improve the local area, function as a social safety net for those in a precarious labour market, and facilitate greater movement and use of public transport. Public transport would be available to the public, currently, many are restricted financially from using it.

Twiglet
Big society fund, its council funding on the cheap, proper bargain. It's not that cheap - my commute costs more than £25 a week so for a few hours' work it's far more expensive than paying someone minimum wage.
