Bassman62
Most cars are built for right hand drive. It costs more for a LHD car (expensive re-tooling) as not many countries have them. However, this is a minor concern to changing which side of the road we drive on. All cars made in Japan for their own market drive on the left as does Cyprus. Bassman62
As most of our vehicles originate from countries that drive on the right side, wouldn't the price come down if they were LHD?Japan and as far as I know some other far eastern countries drive on the left. Harleyman
If it had seemed a practical idea 60 plus years ago that would have been the time to have done it. Too late now. Too many vehicles on the road. A nightmare to change all the signage and what to do with thousands of very expensive buses with their loading doors on the left side and driving postions on the right
crookesey
Japan and as far as I know some other far eastern countries drive on the left. I wager that they produce and export more LHD models than they do RHD for home and away, the USA are great purchasers of Japanese vehicles. shirleyF
My apologies, I thought the original poster said we should be taxed for driving on the road. And I already am.
anywebsite
Japan and as far as I know some other far eastern countries drive on the left. There are quite a few countries that drive on the left, including Japan, which is a big producer of cars & quite a big market too. Wikipedia says there are 76 countries that drive on the left: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right-_and_left-hand_traffic#Jurisdictions_with_left-hand_traffic So the re-tooling for car manufacturers to produce right hand drive cars is nonsense, all the other countries would need to change too. We don't share a land border with any country that drives on the right, so no problems with crashing at the border. To change, it'd make everybody's right hand drive vehicle scrap value. Lots of people would want a new car, but it'd have to be brand new or imported. Lots of junctions would need altering. Every road sign & traffic light would have to be moved. There'd be an increase in accidents while everybody got used to the change. It'd cause a lot of problems, cost everybody a lot of money, while providing only minor & debatable possible benefits. anywebsite
It'd be a better idea if every other country had to drive on the correct side of the road (the left). It makes more sense to have right hand drive when most people are right handed.

DT Ralge
Haven't read the entire thread but i think we could usefully trial driving on the right, cars first and if it worked ok trucks, vans and buses could follow suit a week or two later.
