vwkittie
It's kind of depressing that people jump like a lemming to an erroneous and wooly conclusion I agree. The image seen is a superior mirage.. http://www.islandnet.com/~see/weather/elements/supmrge.htm For examples of another one in China of quite stunning quality, see. http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/photo/2006-05/08/content_583947.htm That is really cool! Makes sense
vResistance
This was reported in the Mail Online a few weeks ago. As someone else has already pointed out, it's simply the result of mistranslation. Nothing to do with a mirage at all. The buildings are exactly where they appear to be. There's a site (can't be bothered to find it again....) that shows the same views without the mists. It's kind of depressing that people jump like a lemming to an erroneous and wooly conclusion I agree. They say they had seen pictures without the mist and the city is there. Is that incorrect then ? Were they just acting clever ?
Obelix
That is really cool! Makes sense I've seen the ones that you get over the cooler seas (specifically the Welsh mountains rising up far far too high when seen from Eire) but I've never seen ones as clear as those in the links - they are quite stunning. I always thought that this was a possible source for the myth of Atlantis

Whoops, you appear to have mis-read his post, he said superior mirage, not image.

Apologies - that's what I meant - it doesn't look like any sort of mirage - srill say it is simply that you can't see the bottoms of buildings due to the mist

There is a link in one of my posts that references an event in 2006 I think in China over the sea showing a quite amazing superior mirage. As you say though one of the others was probably just a mist effect.
vResistance
So really I am none the wiser as to what the truth is about the "mirage". I'm more inclined to think the city is where it seems to be ,as surely the image is too clear to be explained by bending light but still I can find no pictures without the mist. Bit of a mystery this still then.
Obelix
yes because bending light in a camera or telescope cannot produce a clear image can it...? There is no mystery at all, save why some people seem to have an almost pathalogical need to find something bizzare going on.

Not really - this story has some photos of a couple of the same places without the mist. http://www.whiteowlconspiracy.com/topnews/the-china-huangshan-city-mirage-hologram-%E2%80%9Cproject-blue-beam%E2%80%9D-hoax/
