Should Chesterfield, Barnsley, Rotherham etc become 'Greater Sheffield'?

If there are gaps and "green bits" between all of those places then no. You've answered your own question.

But even in "Greater Manchester" - which is a manufactured and invented concept - by the time you get out as far as Stockport, Wigan, Altrincham, Oldham, and especially Saddleworth - part of Yorkshire not Lancashire there's enough local pride and belief to make people think they're not Mancunians, but will go there to shop, got out, take trains, and fly on their holibobs.

other than GMPolice, GMCFire&rescue , GMPTE you mean ...

The council doesn't exist. Various quangos do. The situation is the same here, where you have a South Yorkshire PTE, a South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue, and so on ... but no South Yorkshire Council. And therefore, technically, no South Yorkshire county - since counties only officially exist insofar as they have a council.

Historically, and in the minds of most people, the counties still are what they were for centuries, regardless of political boundaries. Beighton still feels like a Derbyshire village, and Sheffield is still part of Yorkshire.

a lot of north east derbyshire towns have a sheffield postcode s40, s18 etc but they are in derbyshire and proud to be so, like others have posted they do not wish to be connected to yorkshire in any way shape or form, with the state of the city at present who would!
