Tony
Rather a shocking report. 93% of claimants on sickness benefit were found to be able to work. The follow on to this is whether or not there is adequate support and encouragement to get the 97% working. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-14280849 Only 7% of people claiming sickness benefits were unable to do any sort of work, new figures have shown. New claimants of Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) must undergo tests to see if they are capable of some sort of employment. Of 1.3 million tests between October 2008 and November 2010, some 88,700 were considered unfit for any work.
HeadingNorth
Unfortunately, that 93% includes the people who can do an hour or two's work on a one-off occasion for a test, but would not be capable of doing so day in day out while in employment. So it's a fairly useless test.
Tenants
- agree with HeadingNorth, this is just some new stat so we can all point the finger at someone, and then let the government take away more of our rights, tax us more and slash the benefits (Having us all naively agreeing to it at the same time) What does "be able to work" mean Just about everyone can type something, and if they have neurological disorder preventing them from typing, then working as a guinea pigs for pharmaceutical tests is possible??? Are we being too harsh on people ... as more of us feel the crunch and have to pay more for their every day lives, work longer hours and get less for it... are we just feeling more disgruntled towards those that "CAN'T WORK" ? Mecky
But the report is total rubbish isn't it? It can mean whatever people want it to mean and since the government is keen in pushing people around they are try to influence public opinion to their way of thinking to make the job a whole lot easier. This isn't even news, it wasn't published on the BBC website last night/very early this morning and has been disected. We have moved on from the matter.
andygardener
Not to mention atos's loss rate at appeal is 39%, so the 39% found fit to work by atos is actually 23.79% so that makes the headline figure 22.2% straight away.

chem1st
Everyone could do some sort of work. Do they need to? Not really. 1000 Euro für jeden machen die Menschen frei As long as there is sufficient reward to ensure the essential work is done...
Rich
Hard to believe, but I had to be classed as "unfit to work" in order to get disability benefits to which I am entitled, yet I've been doing voluntary work for nigh on 20 years!
