Wildcat
I am now as I'm trying to answer all posts. I'll blame religion for lots of problems and I don't hide that. You can't say that these people are starving and fighting because of their secularism. You are rather missing the point if you blame religion for what is a mixture of a nationalist problem... the struggle for a "Greater Somalia" including areas of high Somali populations in Kenya and Ethiopia that were not included in their territory at the time of independence and the federal independence taken away from them and a conflict between clans with different aspirations in different regions. The conflict has its roots in the way we ruled it under empire, making treaties denying rights of the people to self determination and pre-existing power struggles exacerbated and inflamed by colonial fighting, Italian fascists their guerilla war tactics and the colonial method of rule of playing one side off against another. erebus
Guns for tools??? Well be serious there is no REAL money in tools, and the global military industrial complex would do what? Grind to a halt? You must be joking! The real money will be and has always been in the industrialized war machine, makes consumerism by civilians seem pathetic by comparison. A tool can last a lifetime, whereas a bullet can last a microsecond, and at up to a few million each for some weapons, that last at the longest a few seconds, its celebrations all the way to the champagne and prostitutes. On a fairy tale world where people decided to turn guns into agricultural tools, and everyone lived happily ever after is plain rollocks, its just infantile. What is the next game? Is there a god and where has he been hiding? Other life forms in the universe? how many angels can dance on a pin head? Selling weapons sound s nasty so we call it defense a perfect euphemism for the plebs to accept. Not merchants of death at all, and the UK is one of the biggest DEFENCE producers in the world, and hopes to expand. Maybe we might get into the market in China? Utter rubbish! How long must we listen to the drivell about colonialism, the Mulsims control Somalia and it is their aim to keep people down and in a backward medieval state. And you could be sentenced to death for wearing a bra, what has that got to do with colonialism.

You must be joking! The Somalis trade whatever they have for weapons, AK47s not British assault being the favourite weapon. The Mulsim Somalis prefer weapons even to the point of letting their own women and childre startve to death.

Bassman62
Somalia wasn't a country under British rule, part of it was, part of it was Italian. Were millions starving?

The billions being spent on the "War On Terror" in Afghanistan would certainly cover a few winter fuel payments.
