My Pet Hate- tailgating!

Recommended Posts

I,ve been driving now for 50yrs,cars at first then onto Class 3, ending as a class 1 HGV driver.I,ve been just about everywhere in the U K,nights out in my artic which was like a home from home,it had a sprung bed, overnight heating, telly,c b radio, cooker, cool box,gas stove you name it!.I,ve driven thousands of miles,I,ve seen all kinds of accidents on the motorways, some of them horrific, mostly caused by bad driving. On a normal day I could count 5 or 6 times cars shooting red lights,I don,t mean amber, red, but my pet hate of all is the impatient aggresive <removed> who tailgate, the accidents caused by this is astounding, usually 4 or more cars smashed front and rear, thousands of pounds worth of damage, and also the injuries to the drivers. Its my opinion most car drivers cant see past the end of their bonnet, and then theres women drivers, they fall into two catorgories, over cautious or absolutely crazy,I would make the driving test 5 times as hard for em.That should wind a few people up but I don,t care, thats my opinion I,ve seen em in action!:rant::roll:

Hmmmm yes I quite agree with you. I drive 1000's of miles a year and and the majority of HGV's are the best/safest drivers about. (I do not know any HGV drivers or drive one myself either) In my opinion - yes just mine, I personally believe (and I will get struck down by saying this) but most male drivers are pretty good its just the young males, old males and women, usually with blonde hair (but not always) that are pathetic at driving.

I think what would be an excellent way of learning to drive would be to teach in all different vehicles YES ALL OF THEM and then the ignorant people will understand what REAL driving is all about.

ps signed by a 40 yr old female with blonde hair :hihi:

Haven't you? It's when you pass someone whilst driving.

very clever

If people didn't drive too slow ,people wouldn't have to tailgate them .

Simples. :)

that quote was in answer to this post

Try moving into the slow lane so us faster drivers can get on with our daily work. I hate you plodders in the right hand lane.

mine is HGV pillocks clogging up the middle lane at 55 mph whilst overtaking another HGV doing 54 mph that is , until they come to a hill and mysteriously the one going 54 mph starts doing 53 mph and the one doing 55 mph is now doing 52 mph and eventually falls back and pulls back in - twenty miles later leaving a horrendous tailbackk of tailgating drivers...

you should all be kept to the inside lane or preferably be made to drive at night.

I take it you don't make use of the 3rd lane then?

The top and bottom of it is that there is too much traffic of all kinds, the trouble with Hgvs is that almost everything in the UK is delivered by road,if the lorrys were not there the country would grind to a halt!.The motorways are struggling to cope, some of the places I,ve been sent to you would struggle to get a Transit near never minda large artic with a 40ft trailer!.One I recollect St.Agnes Cornwall you went down an A road to the village turn left a must,a froggy driver went right and was stuck 2 days a huge helicopter had to lift his trailer out.The road I went up was a small lane touching both sides of the trailer, straight away a car plus caravan came at me,he managed to jack-knife in a gateway and I passed, after a mile on the cliff tops there was an S bend with a few cottages on it,one had a room unoccupied it had been hit so many times.I came to my turn no chance it was a dogleg to the left so I went on a mile into another hamlet, backed the trailer up a side road and headed back and down to my drop afterwards repeating the proccess to exit. This was at teatime after a 4am start I spent the night on the clifftops looking at the stunning landscape watching the sunset whilst I wound down!PHEW!:help:

I consider myself a thinking driver - just wanna get where I'm going safely and with as little hassle as poss. Tail-gating is gonna get you in the end. But very often it is as much the fault of the inconsiderate moron in front of you who thinks that just because he/shes not in any kind of hurry, they can plod along at 20 mph!

I learned how important good separation is by having driven motor bikes as well as cars from age 16 - rapid deceleration on bikes will very often see your arse hit the dirt even if you don't collide with the vehicle in front.

Everyone should be compelled to ride a bike for 12 months before they are entitled to a provisional car license - that would do a lot to make people aware of other motorists.

Re bold bit. This really belongs on another recent thread, but here goes anyway -

No. The decision to tailgate is totally the responsibility of the person doing the tailgating. Even if you are forced to travel at 20 mph, it is just as easy to do this a few cars lengths further back as it is to do it a few feet behind the other car.
