old tup
As a young schoolboy Tup our class at Hillfoot School were taken on a visit to Graves Art Gallery where we were shown various large oil paintings of Sheffield scenes .One in particular caught my attention it showed Hillsborough Barracks in new condition, soldiers on horseback some pulling guncarriages, ladies with bustles and parosols.Where the Owlerton Stadium now stands were cornfields,Birley Meadows and at the bottom there was our cottage,I think the date was at the turn of the 18th century.Several times since Ive tried over the years to get info about the painting but no joy I,m afraid.I was wondering if anyone on the forum knows anything that may help me,anything at all would be appreciated!:help:

HughW
The picture retep suggested at PictureSheffield is an engraving rather than an oil painting, and I can't see any soldiers. But is the picture you are thinking of Old Tup from the same sort of viewpoint, looking down from Walkley, with the railway in the background? To put it another way, where was your cottage and where was it in the picture? I have in mind, but I can't locate the book it's in, a painting looking the other way, from the hillside above Wardsend Cemetery, looking across Birley Meadows to the barracks. It's a big oil painting and it's on display in the museum now. Hugh
old tup
HughW=I cant remember the viewpoint exactly-the cottage stood at the side of where the Sheffield College is nowadays.Around the mid 1800s a water mill with tilt-hammer stood nearby. On Picture Sheffield-Liversey St it shows 2 cottages ours was the partial view of the right hand one! The other was demolished by the 1940s when we arrived, there should have been substantional market gardens in the early days!.
