Towton
Talk about expediency for pretencious 'stars'? We've had Sting and his Rain Forests in the 80's. Peter Gabriel and Amnesty International. Where are they now, don't the forests and human rights matter now?

Mister M
Talk about expediency for pretencious 'stars'? We've had Sting and his Rain Forests in the 80's. Peter Gabriel and Amnesty International. Where are they now, don't the forests and human rights matter now? Well we've had Wayne Rooney, Richard Bacon & Leona Lewis going on twitter to condemn the rioting. If you call that sad triumverate 'celebrities'
nickycheese
I think sometimes 'celeb' promotion of causes has a shelf-life. Initially it may raise the cause' s profile, but after a while it becomes counter productive and people are put off by "Sting going on about the rainforests again". I suspect the celebs either realise this, or are advised as such. Sting's Rainforest Foundation still appears to be going: http://www.rainforestfoundationuk.org/Who_we_are Peter Gabriel still seems to be campaigning for Amnesty and Human Rights, though his profile isn't as high now as in the 80s: http://www.petergabriel.com/focus/ http://www.amnesty.org/en/news-and-updates/news/peter-gabriel-ambassador-of-conscience-global-music-human-rights-tour-20080910
Mecky
So called celebrities are only making such statements to further themselves and if they can capture the public immagination at the same time, so much the better. There are plenty of other people who make political or environmental statements around the world but they are not at all bothered about getting their ugly mugs plastered all over the front pages or the TV screen.
