Nagel
Starkey said the rioting "whites had become blacks". You don't need to be an advocate of politically delicate language to appreciate that seems to be a condemnation of all black people or their lifestyle. Had Darcus Howe made such a crass statement about "whites"-the reaction wouldn't have been an ambivalent one. He compounded the aggravation by claiming the black Labour MP David Lammy sounded white, as if his elevation could only have been achieved by becoming less black. The fact is the riots of last week had little to do with "black culture" or whites imitating it. Starkey is utterly confused about modern Britain and confuses race with class. David Lammy sounds bourgeois which he is, not white. I think the concept of bourgeois blacks just doesn't compute in David Starkey's brain. Darth Vader
He knew how it was going to play out, before he even mentioned Enoch Powell. He knows this will just serve to bring him more publicity, which is basically greed, and therefore it's ironic he's getting on his high horse about the 'shopping with violence'. He might be a decent historian - I don't know - but during his stint in Jamies School, he displayed the emotional intelligence of a coco pop.
