Arena Mole
The Sainsbury's UK School Games is a multi-sport event for the UK's elite young athletes of school age. The sports programme in 2011 will for the first time include Rugby 7's and Wheelchair Basketball with a change to the Cycling competition from road cycling to mountain biking. These sports combined with the existing programme of Athletics, Badminton, Fencing, Gymnastics, Hockey, Judo, Swimming, Table Tennis and Volleyball, gives a total of 12 sports. There is an integrated programme of disability events (physical and learning disabilities) in Athletics, Swimming and Table Tennis resulting in a projected 1800 competing athletes. Each of the twelve sports is combined into a four day Games environment designed to replicate the feel of a major event such as the Olympic Games, Paralympic Games or Commonwealth Games. Wheelchair Basketball is the largest and one of the blue ribbon leading Paralympic Sport, with its roots going back to the late 40's. Although initially a rehabilitation and recreational activity for spinal cord injured patients, it quickly developed into a competitive sport and today there are over 80 wheelchair basketball clubs across the UK competing in the National League. Wheelchair Basketball embraces a wide range of disabilities including paraplegics, spina bifida, amputees, brittle bones, cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis. Able bodied players are eligible to play up to division one and in the junior league and women's league. Virtually everyone who can conceivably play wheelchair basketball is encouraged to do so. Doors will open half an hour before the start of the game.
