Can't Britain just close and say we are full up?

That just shows how much you don't know regarding the true facts, only a small percentage of the UK became rich.

What I sugest is for you to get hold of a history book showing living conditions in the UK at the time our empire was at its height, people so poor rickets and all other forms of diseases a go-go, TB (now reintroduced by immigrants) and Polio were only eradicated in the UK after the welfare state was set up.

Standard of living only improved dramaticaly during the years following WWII.

There seems to be a mindset among some people here that the UK has been so bad in the past that it deserves anything that the world can throw at it. Nor does it have any right to hold pride in itself or protect itself. I can't quite work this out.

If this held any water at all then most of Europe could go and help themselves to anything they wanted in Germany. Of course this would be totally ridiculous.

Seems weird that you should try to correct someone on their history when that said someone didn't even mention a specific time in history, yet you continue with a specific time as though someone has argued the point.

Standard of living improved dramatically after the introduction of a standardised sewage system... everyone benefited from that, long before the WW11.

You're right, the health of the nation did improve dramatically post war due to NHS. Trying to understand your issue with present immigrants and rickets and the closing of our borders. Or are you attempting to cheapen the debate by insinuating that immigrants and TB are synonymous?

The UK became wealthy and has supplied us with our hugely above average standard of living through the exploitation of resources across the globe:

Does that bit ring a bell? Or were we still colonising places in 2010. this guy is implying about the British empire and you know it you're just being argumentitive as ever.

Please elaborate. If you don't mind.

What has happened is that the number of people coming here has gone up and the number leaving has gone down. The 20% (actually 21%) is the increase in the difference between the two figures i.e. there has been a 21% increase in the difference between those people arriving and those leaving. Or summat like that.

The biggest number of people arriving from outside the EU come here to study. From within the EU it's to work. It's all swings and roundabouts as those coming to study will bring in a lot of money that they will spend here. Anyone wanting to limit their numbers will be limiting the amount of money coming into the UK and cities like Sheffield which attracts a lot of overseas students.

he could have been talking about shady oil deals with despots, unfair trade practices, weapons deals...among other things.

colonization might have given the start but exploitation didn't end with the fall of empire.
