The Dronfield Arms pub

Dronfield is becoming a great place to drink if you like real ale eh? You've got the excellent coach and horses, the newly reopened 3 tuns and now this one.

It used to attract a younger crowd in the past - and I notice they are appealing to this with their "Carling" lager for example. No serious real ale pub would have that on the bar.

I imagine they are going to try and straddle the local market and attract a mix of folks. Good luck to them. It's not easy trying to have mass appeal though and the kind of crowd that used to go in there before were not real ale drinkers.

Should be interesting to see how it works out. I hope it succeeds but I can see it gravitating away from having a big choice of real ales and becoming more of a younger person's drinking hole.

If I were in for a pub crawl, It would definitely be on my list. Bus and train links are good, I reckon that starting at the Queen Vic and working down sounds sense.

The Dronfield town pub crawl, if you were to do them all, is:

Coach & Horses - Victoria - Blue Stoops - Green Dragon - Bridge - Dronfield Arms - White Swan - Three Tuns

You could potentially add in the Dronfield Woodhouse pubs - Jolly Farmer, Talbot, Miners Arms and Hearty Oak.

Carling is their token something everyone has heard of. It is actually a lager that is good at what it does - low(ish) ABV and inoffensive.

I think the Coach & Horses sell Carling oddly enough, although they do make up for it with some of the other stuff they sell both on draught and in bottle. It's not unusual at all to see real ale pubs selling mainstream lager, although there is a very welcome trend towards better quality kegged beers then the likes of Carling.

As to the Dronfield Arms previous incarnation, the Old Sidings was a decent place many moons ago but over time gained a terrible reputation.
