Cyclone
What about evening classes, Saturday morning clubs, holiday clubs and classes? I'd still take the bet. Schools are closed more often than open, and even when open the times when children might be leaving them are restricted. The only reason I wouldn't take it at 90mph is due to the types of roads schools are normally on, meaning that speed would likely be dangerous irrespective of the presence of a school. Xt500
That is why we don't reduce all speed limits everywhere to 5mph. It would cut deaths by road accident to effectively zero, but the price is not worth paying. Which leads to the inevitable question. What price is worth paying? How many deaths per year are we willing to tolerate as being the necessary cost of having a reasonable transport system? Lets be straight here,no one gives 2 monkeys about road safety,if they were then road safety wouldnt be a one trick pony would it? Getting drivers to keep their distance would stop alot more accidents than getting drivers to slow down a few mph (which is what most get done for) but in reality reducing the road flow and speeds actually bunches traffic which in turn actually makes accidents alot more likely. Some people are just living in cookoo land, the whole speed thing is about cash not safety. What were never told is a big percentage of accidents are NOT caused by speed nor are the vehicles involved speeding, but that doesnt make any difference to them using the same stats to get another cash machine located. mike84
Seems that the twaddle foisted upon us that "Speed Cameras" are there to stop accidents has been proved wrong now. Seems like a study on them has come up with a different reason - as many of us thought from their onset - most are just simple "revenue collectors". What makes this story credible is that it was carried out by the DOT, aye the Department of Transport, a Government body. So there you have it, we are been fleeced again it would seem. http://www.walletpop.co.uk/2011/08/24/speed-cameras-revealed-as-dangerous-money-spinners/?icid=maing-grid7%7Cuk-bb%7Cdl4%7Csec1_lnk3%7C75327 Regards Angel. The revenue collected from speed cameras is great, an optional tax that only idiots contribute to. Luckily there are also plenty of studies and figures that also show they have reduced accidents where they have been placed. Increased road safety is also a spin off / secondary to the idiot tax that they collect.
Cyclone
Would I be correct in thinking that some clever mod has merged a topic about government lies and speed cameras into a single thread?

Mr_Squirrel
Speed cameras collect money from motorists exceeding the speed limit without question, discretion or prejudice. They also fail to educate the 'victim' or detect any other issues that may be present with the vehicle or driver in question.. IE Drunk, bald tyres etc. A decent copper with with a radar gun who will stop speeding motorists can exercise discretion, question and educate the motorist and examine the vehicle before passing judgement to prosecute. Speed cameras were an effective safety device when they were first installed at accident blackspots and people respected them.. now though, their effectiveness has been exploited to extort money in the most ridiculous of places and for the most minor of offences. Its little wonder that many motorists have little regard for them anymore.

Those are their good points; you seem to be quoting them as if you thought they were bad ones.

Apart from the authority that benefits from the revenue, please explain why you think that automated prosecution is a good thing?
