Supermarket Car Parks

Recommended Posts

After a visit to Tesco in Inverness and due to an injury I sat as a passenger in the car park, I would think the capacity was for in excess of 750 up to 1000.

Sitting there you watch and form oppinions, after 1 hour it was an eye opener.

40% of all the cars were 4x4's with no muck on the wheels and here is the sad part 30% were women drivers who could not park.

This is not a dig at women drivers, but why do they drive this type of a vehicle and cannot control them is it because they feel safer.

It was strange earlier this year when we had heavey snow falls they were not on the road there was on occasion a woman in a 4x4 was stuck on the road to Inverness I stopped to help and offer a lift into town, but she was driving in normal mode. I said put it in 4 wheel drive the second leaver she said I dont know what that is for my husband said do not toutch it.

I put it into 4 wheel drive low ratio for her and she was on her way. I gave her my phone number if she was stuck did not here from her untill a week later she saw me in the car park and present me with a bottle of wine and a thank you note.

My point is people should be able to control the vehicle and be aware of all the controls before they take to the roads and this applies to both men and women

I think there is a tendancy for some people with small children to think that a jeep type 4 wheel drive vehicle will protect their children in a collision more than a normal lower slung saloon car. They think that type of car is stronger. which is why you see many women driving them.

However there was a BBC radio feature about this issue where they revealed that this type of car comes off much worse in a crash due to the centre of gravity being higher. They are more likely to turn over. This means if you have small children in the back of your car they would actually be safer if you had a standard saloon car, especially a larger one which can take impacts and crash damage better.

Total propaganda. Run into a brick wallat 30mph in a smartcar, then do the same with a Range Rover. Then tell me which is the best at protecting you.

you didn't contradict anything I said with that.

However, drive down a hill at 40mph and get clipped by a mini. Your range rover may roll over 4 or 5 times whereas your ford sierra will remain on its four wheels.

This matters especially if you have your windows down and especially if your rear passengers do not have their seatbelts on, because a top heavy range rover barrel rolling at 25 mph could cause loss of upper limbs apart from other serious injuries.

In your standard car the crumple zones crumple and the passengers may get a bit of whiplash, but everyone gets out unscathed.

  • 2 weeks later...

Earlier this week at Frecheville shops a lady in a large car reversed in to the space in front of me, the space was probably about 4 ft longer than her car and she reversed in no trouble, she then proceeded to leave 3' 6" of space in front of her car and 6" of space between her car and mine, is this poor spacial awareness, ignorance or selfishness?

This is from 10/15 years ago and a true fact.

As i was sitting in the car as my wife did a quick trip to the town centre shops, a lady pulled up some 30 feet in front of me, no other cars within of a good 30 feet both ways as lines were double yellows. Anyways, she parked up relatively straight to my surprise and in about 3 mins which is not that ba. It was a saloon car of Escort size. Credit to the woman driver, she go out, walked up to the pavement end in her jeans which were a bit to small for her more than ample butt. She looked at the car and the pavement, it was about 2 feet away from kerb in a relatively narrow road. Credit to her, she dashed back to the drivers side and I thought she is going to move the car closer to the pavement. To my surprise she got her handbag, locked the car and f/d off. The car looked as though in was supposed to be driving along the road and not parked.

Antoehr time a woman driver went up another cars rear at a gentle speed, no obivious damage, and then started crying.
