abjo441
we would love to own our own static caravan but having looked at van prices for something nice plus ground rent etc would it not be cheaper to hire one as and when required at a site of your choice and why are ground rents dear

Doingalright
If you're intending to be at a site long term, you can't get a caravan and have it for years and years, I believe you have to regularly upgrade, which is ******** on stilts.
Jason Bourne
What's the point of buying a caravan? Simple. It annoys those prats off Top Gear.

Number Six
People pay for certainty (can go whenever they like, and they know what will be there), they pay for convenience (you can leave all your holiday clobber there). Added together I guess that means they pay more than it would cost to hire a van for the times they use it. What you have to consider also is that the site owner could put a van for hire on that space, so it has to return at least as much profit for them as it would with a hired van. That said I know someone who has one that is used almost every week of the year by various family members. It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if he lets customers use it too occasionally and therefore has it tax-deductible. The best way to do it if you want to have one long term is probably to buy some land and a wind turbine.
carosio
ble. The best way to do it if you want to have one long term is probably to buy some land and a wind turbine. Provided, of course, that you can get planning permission to keep a mobile home on the land. A relative had a large van at Chapel St Leonards on the Blue Anchor site and the total expense was approaching £3k/year (2010). The 12ft wide van was bought new about 6 years ago for £15k and was sold at the end of last season for around £5k, although there might have been a site owners transferal fee on top. mumkin
Here's what happens when you buy a static caravan. Usually purchased through the site (they take a commission) The agents deliver to the site (site takes a commission) The site owners or the agents deliver to the pitch (site impose a delivery charge from gate to pitch) The site then impose a connection charge. In most cases the "home" can only remain on site for 15 years, it is then considered too old and you will be requested to "upgrade" it or leave the site. (on some sites it can be 10 or 12 years) If you upgrade, you have to pay for the home to be disconnected and removed from site. Your new upgraded van with then be bought from the site again and the whole sorry tale starts again. Been there and got the tee shirt!!
