Tony Erikson
It's pretty clear that other than at Christmas, easter and the odd Sunday all churches are rarely used anymore. During these financially difficult times, would it not be a great gesture by the church to turn their large empty halls into dining rooms and or small studio type apartments? It could really kill a few birds with the one stone. Those who are losing homes will rest in the knowledge that they have a roof over their head whilst they get back on their feet, the church will literally have a captive audience and can be seen giving something back to the community. What do you think? Church goers, would you mind sharing your church with the homeless?
Quinnwok
How about deporting the one million illegal immigrants? That would create plenty of room. That would provide employment. That would ease pressure on both the public and charitable groups.

If they're illegal, how would they legitimately rent anywhere?
chem1st
It wouldn't work. The problems are due to the policy of government, not policies of the Church. They'd soon fill up and the problem would remain. It would make more sense to use disused shops, as unemployment rises and spending power falls. The FIRE economy is better of utilising the derelict shops and industrial units. The Church is a place where the community can rally in times of need. I.e. now. If Dave wants the BIG society to work he needs to start and remove a bit of the red tape that stops things like this being done. Then again could they not just go down a similar line as the squatters. It seems quite hard to get squatters out.

Tony Erikson
Of course it would work and of course it would help all legal residents of the uk. Why would it? If they're illegal then they're technically not making the numbers up. They're likely being housed illegaly.

They are still being housed, in a house, flat, whatever. A place denied to a legal UK resident.

Illegally so the numbers don't really add up. You can't count what's not been recorded.
