cardoor
......you have insurance and your car needs an MOT which has been pre booked? Just phoned a mechanic and he says you can't do this anymore, as the law now stipulates the car must be transported on a pick up truck to the MOT centre? and the law doesn't seem very clear to me after looking at the government website http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_069671
Obelix
Yes you can. As long as you are on the way to or from a testing station or a place of repair then you will be fine. Strictly speaking after passing you should then go home but they wont care if you are going towards a post office to buy a tax disc.

stupid head
You cannot drive an untaxed vehicle under any circumstances, though you can drive one without MOT as long as your on the way to an MOT appointment that is booked in advance. It seems your wires are crossed regarding tax and MOT.

Obelix
It's illegal to drive on the road without valid tax. No it's not. The link the OP referenced makes it perfectly clear that you can "Driving an untaxed vehicle to an MOT test You can drive your vehicle to and from a pre-arranged test at an MOT test station as long as you have adequate insurance cover in place for the use of that vehicle. This is also for vehicles being driven to and from a pre-arranged test at a Vehicle Inspection Check (VIC) test station, an approved weight testing station and reduced pollution test. " All you need is adequate insurance cover anda prebooked MOT.
