September the fourth. A day in history marked by a dark, deep deed.

Isaac Izal, creator of the famous shiny toilet paper was beheaded at the behest of Elizabeth, consort of King George and mother of our current queen.

A tragic incident in the marble adorned and gilded bathroom, where the then 4 year old Queen Mum's finger went through the paper caused her to swear; "By God, I'll have that blokes head".

Her Majesty's finger had touched that which it must never touch. Not only was royal protocol breached, but a precedent had been set which revolutionized the manufacture of soft tissue paper. Also, she put a curse on working class people. They would be forced to wipe with Izal until 1975.

On this day, we pray for the soul of Sir Percy Izal, BBC radio 4 gardening correspondent and inventor of famous shiny toilet paper.

Also 100 years ago today (Sept 4 1911) at the scene of a murder in Gasworks Gutter, Gateshead, police inspector Herbert Trunchman was investigating the discovery of a pool of human vomit found besides the severed remains of a man's leg.

On closer scrutiny, he noticed that the vomit contained remnants of chilli, a little known foodstuff in those days, and eaten solely by foreign persons of a Mexican persuasion.

Further investigations revealed that the only Mexican person known to be living in Gateshead at that time was Manuel Santa Cruz de la Palientez, a siesta teacher residing in nearby Muckspreader's Alley.

He was arrested, charged and duly executed two days later. The judge praised Trunchman for the way he speedily brought the case to a close through his knowledge of foreign foodstuff contained within the sick left behind by the killer.

Herbert Trunchman was indeed the father of Foreign Sick science.
