chem1st
A 20-year-old woman is fighting a council’s decision to ban her from living in a shed in her parents’ back garden. NHS worker Victoria Campbell has been living in a one-bedroom cabin since last September while she saves up for a deposit for a house. The structure was built by her parents, Jenny and Colin, at a cost of £14,000. And she has the support of a local planning consultants 'fusion tp', a company made up of former local authority planning officers. Jonathan McDermott, managing director of the company said: 'We have seen the decision and are concerned. 'Planning permission should have been given from the council and in support of that is previous inspector’s decisions.' Victoria Campbell pictured in the shed she lives in, in her parents' garden, with her fiance Bill Warden. The pair are trying to save money and pay off their debts. The English couple are on low wages, they earn a little bit more than minimum wage but it is still over 60% below average wage. These people can't afford housing, they get dole wages, and most likely get their income topped up by the state with tax credits (even though one is a NHS care worker - works for the state). However, they do earn a good wage for their age. Presumably the council would like force them out of the shed and into HMO accommodation, many people in the council, including housing benefit advisers are into Buy to Let. They don't wan't to see rent yielding tenants go to waste! They could yield enough rent for a golf/skiing holiday abroad (private landlords literally suck money out of he economy off of the backs of the young and poor - a lot of it through taxpayer funded housing benefit). What of the young couple, they are trying to do the right thing and pay down debt and save money. Many young couples are in the predicament of having to choose to live in a shed, caravan or HMO. At least a shed or caravan offers privacy! These people are the workers, the countrymen and women that have to pay off the debt, it is they who are suffering for the previous generations fecklessness. Would you like your child to live in a shed? Perhaps raise a family in one? Can we still call ourselves a 1st world country? Why not allow people to construct their own slum housing? (I for one would be happy to have a plot of land in Sheffield on which to build a cheap dwelling, rather than rent) Maybe we should build dormitories for minimum wage workers with a communal shower block? Are you claiming there is a housing crisis chem1st ? How can that be, the interest rates are at 0.5% and so borrowing is the cheapest it has ever been. When I was a lad interest rates were around 6%. Are you trying to claim that young people who work for a living are being priced out of housing?
Happ Hazzard
That really isn't a shed, is it? It's more like another small house. Why can't she live in the house? Presumably she was living there before.
Bulgarian
Would you like your child to live in a shed? Perhaps raise a family in one? No, but a tree house, that would be awesome.
tinfoilhat
Is if Friday already. ? If ma and pa can afford 14k on a " shed" (that's a pretty swanky shed for 14k) couldn't they just give them that for a deposit ? We could just let people build what they want, where they want ? Presumably she was living there before. Couples want privacy? Eventually they will want to start a family. If they don't do so by 30, the chance of having a disabled baby rapidly starts to increase. They need somewhere to live that is suitable for a child, and perhaps their parents want them out so they can sell the house and go on an around the world holiday before moving into social housing reserved for the over 40s/50s/55s/60s. Everything is fine in the UK, housing and jobs a plenty, we should invite more immigrants, as we have such an excess of jobs and housing. This is the land of milk and honey! Somebody working for 2 hours on minimum wage earns enough money to buy 3 pints of beer in their local pub. Pubs are booming right now. There is practically one on every corner.
