Fine line
Your success as an individual can only go so far. At some point you will need services and infrastructure provided by the state. What do you think the state should provide? A simple list please. I think the state should provide: Emergency services The NHS The armed forces Road infrastructure Prisons and judiciary Errrrmmmm, someone else can chip in now
Whyt Lindow
We should only have the bare minimum from the government. I'm unemployed and have been for the past 8 months, I've been applying for jobs constantly for the entire period, I have had no luck. Why is that? I'm 20y/o, But that isn't the point of this post. When I'm at the JobCentre, my "advisor" gives me lectures about how I should have a job. I tell her I'm doing my best and that I will take almost anything, but she stares looking unconvinced. I don't ask for much, but the basics for living which according to the JobCentre is £106 every two weeks. I keep getting threatened with my benefit cuts because I've been out of work for so long, I cant help it. The government pledged to make work pay. Can work pay when I can't even find a job? I1L2T3
I think the state should provide: Emergency services The NHS The armed forces Road infrastructure Prisons and judiciary Errrrmmmm, someone else can chip in now What about energy infrastructure, education, telecomms infrastructure, other transport infrastructure (e.g air traffic control) just to add a few others. Anyway, it's a nice list of the essentials. How do we pay for it?

Jobcentres are useless. I agree. They're a classic case of throwing staff and money at a problem hoping it will go away. The money would be better diverted to promoting economic growth, treating the underlying problem. People like yourself who are obviously highly motivated should be left to get on with your job search unhindered without lectures from people who don't appreciate the real world. So, job centres are a good example of something that should be pared back and delivered in a much more efficient way just for those in genuine need of assistance. They would not be too near the top of the list of what the state should provide.
Whyt Lindow
I agree with you I1L2T3, They've done nothing but give me slack on how hard I haven't been working. I'm a qualified IT technician yet I cannot find anything, I've gone for retail, administration and catering all at base level yet no luck. I would prefer that cutback where made to job centres, and less power put in their hands. Even if I can find a job I shouldn't receive hassle from someone who doesn't know the situation that I'm in. I'd prefer a government much like that of ancient Rome.

Whyt Lindow
so why are they cutting these services Because they're the few services that those with money don't tend to rely on. Obviously apart from emergency services.
Mecky
And they moan about labour borrowing money, yet spending is up this year on any amount Labour borrowed and will higher be for the next few years. Even the EU has gone cap in hand to China to borrow money.
Lucifer
Just been reading about how our Pensions and ISA’s have been hammered by 14% since the start of the year and it got me thinking about the shambles we are in and whether or not anyone still supports this lot. Unemployment up Inflation up Share prices falling very sharply Growth almost non existent Benefits being cut from the poor Very little (if any) wage increases Yet some in Government want to cut the Tax of the rich. Is there anyone on here that still defends this lot, and has confidence they can get us out of this mess. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-14920735 " Rowing away from a fast sinking ship ", obviously you are a socialist, look after myself, not go back and help anyone else.
