MrFloppy
Hi Does anyone know what the eligibility criteria for south yorkshire police to attend the speed awareness course rather than taking the points? Ive been done for 37mph in a 30 zone... and want to know if i am looking points? Your'e worse than Hitler!!! Defo gonna get points tho. Not sure if you can request the course or if they have to offer it to you.
Littlepink
Apparently the criteria is that anyone doing between 35 and 42 mph in a thirty zone gets the choice of 3points and fine or to do the course but only if you have no points already . Course costs£85 and lasts 4 hours . Apart from the hassle of going it is very enlightening and in my case it works. I'm very conscious of my speed now , especially on the road I was caught on .....Retford road !
Balpin
You get no points, tea and biscuits, and a good education from senior driving instructors. Well worth it.

No, if it's the OP's first offence, he/she will get a choice of either a £60 fine and 3 points, OR just the speed awareness course of £85. I opted for the course (I was doing 36 mph in a 30 limit). I too am more careful now. The course was quite enjoyable actually.
MonkeyLover
When I got mine, I got a help leaflet in with the NIP (notification of intended prosecution). The first task is to send it back owning up to being the driver within the deadline (usually 21 days). IIRC, you then recieve another letter detailing what they are doing with you re: points/course/worse. If you have not been on a course in the last 3 years and meet the critera (I suspect you do) you will then have a box to tick on your little returnable form to accept the offer. This is usually returnable within 14 days. Mine had a box saying a) Course, b) Points, c) contest. When that has been received and processed you should/may recieve details of or from your nearest course provider. You would then book and pay the fee to the course provider. You can also choose anywhere in the country to take your course so long as you sucessfully complete it within the given timescale (IIRC about 3 months). Spot on, as far as I can remember! As a matter of interest what does IIRC stand for?

Ducky1
If you do the course you do not have to tell your insurance company, accepting points means you have to disclose to insurers for 5 years.
