Will many over 50's have children young enough to count for this?

 

You only need to be 50+ to get the extra tax credits for being 50+ in the first place...

edit: (And have been uneplomyed for 6 months before taking on work..)

 

If they have children too, they get extra for that too...

Reading that seems to say that you must have been on benefits prior to getting it...you don't just get it for being over 50...
