Tony Erikson
Benefits impies some form of benefit. I think it doesn't help the mindset. In this current time of people living off the state and them calling it a "benefit" when really it's government financial assistance is simply projecting the wrong image. Should we just call it welfare assistance? Would the name change make people who live off the state think differently about what they receive. Surely benefits should be a positive term? ben·e·fit/ˈbenəfit/ Noun: An advantage or profit gained from something.

Job Seeker's allowance is a gift? For how long does one have to receive something before it stops becoming a gift?

Tony Erikson
A payment or a gift. Did you see the "or"? I did. Why should it be seen as a gift? Calling it a gift simply implies reward for not having anything. Why not call it a hand up? That sounds far more positive.
Rich
People will always claim benefits regardless of what they're called, no amount of whinging from Daily Fail or Telegraph readers will ever change that FACT!
fake
Hi what about the 40% that are genuinly clainnig benefits Where did you get that figure from? Figures are published by the DWP for fraudulent claims and departmental error but no one know how many people are genuinely claiming a benefit. I cant see that changing the name will make the slightest bit of difference.
Andy
If the welfare state is viewed as a kind of insurance system (you pay in during the good times so you have a security blanket to help you out if you fall down) then it is a benefit. In the same way that being able to get vets bills paid is a benefit of pet insurance. Unfortunatly in some cases the system doesn't work as an insurance policy as there are some people who, for varying reasons, take out without paying in. Changing the name won't help. Re-designing the whole system might do. But whatever you do there will be genuine people who can't claim, and those who don't deserve a penny yet are able to milk the system.
