Can anyone recommend me an estate car?

Recommended Posts

We just bought an Alpha Romeo Sport Wagon.

Is that the dominant version?

OP - value for money the Mondeo is a great buy. There's a huge choice and the petrol engines are pretty reliable. I wouldn't go for the diesel at your budget IMO.

Or else a Primera. Not as many around but they are cheaper than the Mondeo

As has been said above the 406 is very reliable and the diesel goes for huge mileage.

This suggestion is not in jest before I type the detail, but consider the Rover 75 series. They are a far, far better car than most people realise, very comfortable (the higher-end models have more gadgetry and comforts than anything in the same class), and they are surprisingly reliable. The electrics are mostly BMW, and if you buy the diesel, you're getting a BMW engine and gearbox.

I use one as my daily workhorse and it's coming up for 194000 miles of reliable and economical motoring.

The bonus is, because of the stigma over the Rover brand, you can pick them up very cheap.

Peugeot 406, can't be beaten for space, comfort, reliability and economy. We get over 50 to gallon on 2.1 diesel and the bodywork is galvanised so never rots. We used to have 1988 305 which was same, put it through 5 tests and the only thing it failed on was handbrake needed taking up and one of headlights needed resealing.:D:D Then some clown ran into back of OH while he was parked at red light, we were gutted - it was a classic.:roll:

Have to agree... Peugeot 405/6 every time for me.
