damo
Look i'm all in favor of regeneration, im a member of Skyscrapercity and am very pro regeneration, but this building does need to be saved. Err, why? So it can stand empty for years, crumbling to the ground whilst nobody gives a toss about it? How many people have enquired about re-using it since the SYPTE left? Not many I would wager. Well it better then a pile of rubble isn't it!it needs investment no doubt, but this building really belongs to the people of Sheffield.

Vulcan B2
Who owns the building? Surely if would be for them to decide what should be done with it? It is sad to see so many historic buildings demolished, and Sheffield seems to have a knack for not preserving it's history
Bulgarian
Dont you just love people who go around getting buildings listed to stand in the way of progress and regeneration? it is possible to regenerate an area without first demolishing everything, the canal basin was regenerated without it being leveled first. But what you said is true, it will just stand there until it falls down, nobody will invest anything in it and another building with a bit of character/history will be gone eventually. crookesey
I'm attempting to recall how it started off it's life, I can go back a good way but this has me foxed, however I do remember a B & C Co-op just a bit further up. Does anyone remember the silver service lunches upstairs at the Alexandre Hotel? As for the demolition, I don't think that it has a lot going for it, it ain't Coles Corner, the Empire, Grand Hotel or the Hippodrome.
PARROT91
Wish they would knock down the eyesore which is Castle market. What a filthy place.

I have a 1958/59 Sheffield Telegraph Football Guide (price 1/-) and it's full of interesting adverts for lots of Sheffield businesses long gone: Dine at the Alexandra, the spot where true sportsmen meet. Open to non-residents, you can't beat it for food and service, its fully licensed restaurant, selected wine list and good company. Last time I walked past it two women were fighting outside. What a filthy place. It sits next to the Castle Market, which is scheduled for demolition. Like the Market it sits on part of the site of Sheffield Castle, and there is a plan once the Market's gone to open up the site and expose the substantial castle remains, as a public open space.
