Isabelle
I'm sure that 0709 used to be the Rotherham dialling code, does anyone know when it changed to 01709? I've tried Googling it, but can't find any information.

alchresearch
Anyone remember dialling the "9x" numbers for Worksop, Rotherham, Barnsley and the like? Wasn't Rotherham 92 and Worksop 94?

Yes, I do: dialling from Sheffield, Oughtibridge was 86 Chesterfield 93 and Dronfield 95. [i think]
Jeffrey Shaw
Oh, and the Sheffield dialling code is not '01142' and never has been- despite computers believing so.
medusa
Yes, Rotherham changed from 0709 to 01709 on the same day that Sheffield changed from 0742 to 0114 in 1995.
medusa
Oh, and the Sheffield dialling code is not '01142' and never has been- despite computers believing so. I rang a company recently to update a friend's information on their database (she's ill and has no voice, so she gave me all their passwords etc to be able to do this) and their computer simply wouldn't accept a number which started with 0114 3, which is handy for my friend, since that's what her phone number starts with. You'd think that company databases would use real dialling codes, wouldn't you? I wonder if the same affects everybody in Leeds, Nottingham and all the other places that changed to 011something codes?

POLSKI
I can still remember our 5 digit phone number where I lived down Swaledale Road as a kid in the Sixties. We moved from there when I was 9 in '69 but cant remember the number from the 'new ' house.

Good! It serves 'em right. You'd think that company databases would use real dialling codes, wouldn't you? Besides us, the sequence runs: Leeds 0113 Nottingham 0115 Leicester 0116 Bristol 0117 Reading 0118 A good party quiz question is "What's next in this sequence: Nottingham, Leicester, Bristol...?"
