Do you remember the old black lead ranges?

GOLDEN OLDIE

Recommended Posts

My Gram used to give me what she called a basin of hash out of a pan she'd had in the oven, I suppose it was what most people would call an all in stew..

I remember putting pleanty of Henderson on it and dropping big chunks of bread in to soke up the gravy.

Any way what ever you'd call it, it was delicious on a cold winters night...

Zebra Polish !! - yes, that's what my mum used to black lead the stove in our house every Sunday morning, she liked dad and me to stay in bed out of the way while she did it......we kept sticks in what was the water heater at the side as it looked too grotty to use to heat water. The oven was so-so....I think my mum was happy when she got a new gas cooker, especially in summer when you had to build up the fire to heat the oven - phew!

The old yorkshire range , my mum had one in gladstone st ,Darnall , loved the warm cosy feeling it gave and the baking she did , kettle was always on the go . Mum used to clean it every sunday then cook the sunday roast in it , I'm sure roast beef tasted better in those days . Then she got a bit posh and ripped the old black one out and replaced it with a mottled green one , harder to keep clean ! Happy days :)
