manofstrad
With the drop in the value of currency and the rise in value of scrap metal, how long will it be before we get more for our coppers from the scrap dealer than we do in goods over the counter? Andy
This is a few years out of date now but interesting none the less. Wasn't one of the reasons they made 5ps and 10ps much smaller because the old ones cost more to produce than they were worth?
Guest sibon
Blimey. Are you behind the times. A man of your standing wouldn't go breaking the law though... would you:suspect:
chem1st
Copper coins are fast disappearing from circulation. All you have to do is run a magnet over the a pile of coppers(pre92)/steels(post 92), place the steel ones in a bag and deposit them at the bank, your left with the coppers, which have a value. It'll not be long before it's worth keeping the 5s and 10s for the nickel (75%) and copper (25%)...
quisquose
The key point is that the 2p coin doesn't actually belong to you, so the possibility that the scrap price might be slightly more is of no relevance.

bullerboY
I'm surprised you would dirty your hand on vulgar currency such as this MOS,I though shiny gold was your forte! You must be getting through your pile to have thoughts of this nature.
chem1st
I thought that ALL money belonged to MOS! He clearly isn't clued up on lower denomination metal coins. Perhaps he is more concerned with the scrap value of paper money? http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/hyperinflation_weimar_germany.htm
LDeville
Hi This also happened in 2006. A bloke up the road from us made a lot of money doing this and then the price of copper went dowm. Vehicle batteries more than approx ten years old are worth up to 70 to 100 quid as they contain so much expensive metal
