EPetition: force planners to use existing buildings before building more

Recommended Posts

You might be interested in this ePetition, which is to make use of the many buildings which sit empty at the heart of every city and prevent the building of new ones until these are at capacity. This will help to preserve our natural woodland and green spaces, which is vital for the present and our future.

IF the petition gets enough signatures, then MP's will have to debate it in Parliament.

Good idea!

There are far too many empty buildings in Sheffield alone with massive "To Let" sign's outside!

What have planners got to do with private buildings that are waiting for tenants?

It's a reference to planning permission.

Quite possibly because they're unsuitable for the needs of todays businesses.

If that's the case then what else would you suggest is done with them?

Repurpose them. The goal is to stop them being empty, while other building projects are ongoing elsewhere, gobbling up the countryside. It's a complete wrong way of doing it if you take a step back and look at it. We should utilise what we have before we build the next generation of buildings. There are office towers in Sheffield that stand empty and have done for years, for instance.

Maybe the cost of re-purposing them outweighs the cost of just rebuilding.

So there are either too many of these buildings, or they're unfit for the purpose for which they were built. I guess, since they're empty, that most prospective tennants have decided they're too costly to re-purpose.

You're right in that cost, being the only consideration, is what has got us into this foolish position where buildings can stand empty for years, yet new ones are being built... many of whom will then stand empty for years themselves. And the process repeats. And it will not stop unless enough of us say that we want it to.
