Magilla
Fair point, maybe there should be some form of "minimum requirement" when buildings are planned and built, so they can easily be repurposed (within reason) if needed.
Tony
Well if you want to live and work in a draughty, damp, rat infested pile with outside toilets and no internet that is your prerogative. Don't expect others to share your enthusiasm though.
Cyclone
It's a reference to planning permission. Planners can't tell a business it has to go and use an existing property that is vacant. If it were suitable and cost effective then they'd already be doing it. Repurpose them. The goal is to stop them being empty, while other building projects are ongoing elsewhere, gobbling up the countryside. How much countryside is being gobbled up exactly? It's a complete wrong way of doing it if you take a step back and look at it. We should utilise what we have before we build the next generation of buildings. There are office towers in Sheffield that stand empty and have done for years, for instance. Which ones? And why do they stay empty? Is it because they aren't suitable for a modern business, or are the owners wanting to charge an unrealistic rent? Either way, I don't think the planning process is the correct process to encourage there reuse.
theripsaw
You might be interested in this ePetition, which is to make use of the many buildings which sit empty at the heart of every city and prevent the building of new ones until these are at capacity. This will help to preserve our natural woodland and green spaces, which is vital for the present and our future. Here is the link: http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/17728 IF the petition gets enough signatures, then MP's will have to debate it in Parliament. What a load of baloney
