banjodeano
Ah yes the Olympics, you conceed it highly likely then they would have blackmailed their employers in the run up to the games with threats of strikes? If £50k is the 'decent' wage, what was they on before, and would you have described it as 'indecent'? Of course the government were held over a barrel, just like most of the working class are by this government...it was nice to see the union stuff em for once, well done Mr Crow :)
Obelix
Because I suspect very few people, if any, on this crummy website have been both a tube driver and a fireman. Therefore they can't make a reasonable comment without any degree credibility. And he sidesteps the issue - what a surprise....

skinz
I'm just wondering how far 50k goes, down in the smoke.
Gordonb
Saw this all before in 1999 when the Millennium Dome was being constructed. Suddenly all the trades decided that they would go on strike knowing that the government had to complete such a prestigious project on time. Bonuses were being handed out left right and centre to get people back on site.
TeaFan
I'm just wondering how far 50k goes, down in the smoke. A single person on £50k in London would have a good standard of living but would struggle to be able to buy a 1 bedroom ex-council flat. They would likely be paying about £700 pcm rent and their council tax is likely to be very high. They'd have significantly less disposable cash than someone on £50k in Sheffield. Interestingly, in the 1970s LU platform assistants were paid the same as school meals staff. 30 years later they were on about 3 - 4 times as much. That's what good union organisation gets you. TeaFan
Certainly is a good deal for the drivers. Not such a good deal for London commuters and tax payers. The fact that they can and will bring the capital to a halt and hold their employers to ransom. The banks held the rest of us to ransom to the tune of around £1 trillion. Funnily enough your lot in government don't seem to mind that, I wonder if you do. It's different groups of people looking after their own interests. If it's good enough for the bankers then it's good enough for everyone else. If it's not good enough for everyone else then the bankers need to cough up. TeaFan
Is that fair on the school meals staff, or should everybody have been paid 3-4 times as much? With all respect to school meals staff, a platform assistant on the tube is a much more difficult job with much more responsibility. I think the relative wages now give a much better reflection of the difference in roles. That said, school meals staff are badly paid and deserve more, but the tube workers show that if you want better you have to make it happen yourself.
