choogling
I all ways do a northern soul/motown section, but find most people of an age to appreciate it tired and need to sit down after about half an hour. ---------- Post added 09-12-2017 at 17:08 ---------- Northern Soul xmas special The Gas Club at Crookes wmc Saturday 23rd December 2017. 7.30pm-1.00am with a late bar. When northern soul was in its heyday the sound systems were rubbish compared to what we have now, the Beatles for example were at that time 1963ish were playing through Vox ac30 combos. I for one was glad to see the back of vinyl jumping , feedback, and scratchy intros etc. and the weight of a decent collection was more than one trip to the van.I have all the Motown singles on decent quality mp3 but never played most of them on gigs, people just want the same old stuff. Dave Br
This is a old school northern venue where people of a certain age travel to dance to vinyl. Vinyl as you know is making a comeback as they have found out the sound is a lot richer and has a more depth than the digital recording. The allnighter scene is still going strong as one of the big ones is Kings Hall in Stoke where people who are pushing 60 can dance till dawn, great way to exercise and these soulies can give the youngest a good run for their money. Anybody can plug a laptop into a sound system and play the same old same old. There are more sounds we danced to than the top 500. What we are doing is providing a venue to meet the needs of real soulies other than the pub scene
Jinkyj
Absolutely right, Dave. As a couple of 63 year olds, we go to Northern Soul nights just about every Friday and Saturday and the wife, at least, dances for hours, and not just shuffling about. I like Motown oldies as much as anyone but not all are real dance records. The NS soul nights are frequented by regulars and dancing to the same old wedding reception favourites gets very yawn inducing. The number of NS events is rapidly increasing which is a measure of its popularity. These events are also attracting increasing numbers of younger dancers. I think 'choogling' needs to attend a few of these nights to overcome his/her misapprehensions.
