Livni to visit UK without fear of arrest

Just another cowardly act by our Government to appease Israeli terrorists.

Critics claim change in law governing arrest warrants for war crimes is motivated by political pressure from Israel

The former Israeli foreign minister, Tzipi Livni, will meet the foreign secretary, William Hague, in Britain on Thursday in the first test of a new law governing arrest warrants for war crimes.

Westminster magistrates court issued an unprecedented arrest warrant for Livni in 2009 – a move that led to an review of the issuing of such warrants.

The move, which critics claimed was motivated by political pressure from Israel, has paved the way for Livni's visit, which was announced on Monday at a Conservative Party conference fringe event.

At a Conservative Friends of Israel meeting, director Stuart Polak said Livni always planned to come to the UK once there had been a change in the law to prevent her being arrested for political purposes.

Israeli scientist Daniel Shechtman has been named as the winner of the 2011 Nobel Prize in chemistry, the award panel for the prestigious prize announced Wednesday. He was awarded the prize for his discovery of patterns in atoms called quasicrystals, a chemical structure that researchers previously thought was impossible.

Tel Aviv-born Shechtman, 70, is a professor at Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, in Haifa, as well as an Associate of the U.S. Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory, and a professor at Iowa State University.

Congratulations!

Not so. None of them has been convicted of any criminal offence, so what is your real objection?

It isn't for convictions against him that he is wanted for trial. It is for accusations against him.

What is shameful is that this change essentially means that an act which is a war crime if our enemies do it, is not a war crime if our allies do it.

Er, principles of justice demand a conviction before guilt is accepted.

Indeed they do, but they have never demanded a conviction before an arrest warrant can be issued. Are you seriously suggesting that nobody should be tried on war criminal charges until after they have been tried and convicted?

No, I'm pointing-out to you and your confrere that no-one is a 'criminal' unless/until convicted.

So the thread title is contentious and clearly wrong. I'd rephrase your words to read that I'm seriously suggesting that nobody should be called a 'criminal', whether on war crime charges or any other charges, unless and until after they have been tried and convicted.

Surely you'd agree with that?
