Stan Tamudo
I wouldn't go so far, but maybe they should not get the money paid into their bank account but be given a prepaid debit card or something. The card could then be set not to work in places like betting shops etc. You could even have it so certain items you cannot purchase, such as luxury goods. One other bonus would be the government would know what this money is being used for and could easily see how the amount spent is being used to pay for specific items. If the cost of food has risen over 30% in one year, the amount people receive could mirror this rise. If anybody on the dole fancies a flutter this afternoon then Tom Sawyer in the 2:10 at Nottingham is worth a E/Way bet. 25/1 at the moment. medusa
I don't gamble on principle and although I have bought lottery tickets and put bets on for other people, I don't do it for myself. My choice with my money. If I believe in a cause I will donate what money I can afford to that cause and they don't need to bribe me with the potential that I could win something with the raffle ticket that they offer. If I don't believe in that cause then I won't donate either way round. However, when it comes to other people, as long as it is not hurting anybody and the gambler can afford to lose the money then I'm not going to condemn anybody. Nobody forces people to walk inside a bookies or a casino.
rickiethecat
Gambling is what keeps our economy going! Aren't stock markets just effectively casinos for the financial institutions?

Mecky
As the old saying goes, "Never gamble more money than you can afford to lose."
praises
Some professional gamblers do win, but yes the vast majority lose. I guess for many its just a hobby. People tend to have one vice or another. One mans waste of money is another mans good time. Of course if it crosses a line and becomes a problem then we enter different territory. medusa
I gamble on football just for fun. I don't expect to win. And as far as I'm concerned, if you are using your own money and you can afford to put a roof over your head and food in your family's mouths whilst doing it, then there is no reason that you should feel in the least like you have to defend your actions. Nobody would bat an eyelid if you said that you bought a couple of DVDs a week as your hobby, would they?

It only becomes a problem when you get addicted, which is VERY easy with gambling. Things like online bingo are just designed to get you hooked. I don't even see it as a hobby really, it's just something I enjoy doing from time to time, like buying theatre tickets, or going for a meal.
