Is Halloween Too Commercialised

Recommended Posts

Hi

Like almost everthing else these days, eg Xmas, mithers day, fathers day, Easter/etc/etc, Halloween ihas taken off big style.

We saw a woman spend almost a hundred quid at the tills for her two kids aged about 4/5. The woman looked as though she could have easily used that money to dress the kids in nice clean clothes and decent pair of shoes for herself.

Sadly, more often than not, those that spend the most will have the least to spen. Even more sadly, this group of people usually do not really care about paying their rent/bills etc.

A few years ago when we lived in a nice house and nice area of london NW3, we did not open the door to the Haloween gang. They threw and an egg at the door and caughte the wall as well - the mess on the wall, never really came off in full. We did not bother the police or chase the fools as this would had led to more trouble.

we fear the 31/10 and hope it pours down that night!! Only good thing is that where we live now, hardly any kids and those that did come round a couple of years ago appeared to have parents with them

So you don't live in SW3 any longer either, assuming you ever did live there.

we have already established that you know nothing about cars.

As to the question about halloween. The tradition in sheffield is that for many decades we have mischief night which is the night before halloween. This is when youths go around the neighbours begging for money or tying their gates together or putting dog muck on the step. This was going on in the 1950s to my certain knowledge as one of my mate's dad told us of the tricks they used to do back then.

If you don't want to play then just don't answer the door. There is no law that says you have to answer the door when an unexpected caller rings the bell.

In the US, if we don't want Trick or Treaters coming to the house we don't put our outside lights on, they know not to come then, and it works, I buy and give out candy I don't like, this way i'm not tempted to eat it before the door bell starts ringing :)

Does everyone have to have outside lights ?

There are many houses near me that have no outside lights. I just don't answer the door if I get any calls. Fortunately there aren't many children near me and so I rarely get bothered by it.

Hi

Over there, this event is major, major stuff, fact!! :)

We have lights to the front of the home, but our lot on the whole not that educated, ie lights not on will not stop them. however, in recent years, in the nicer locations parents will go out with kids.

sadly, you get the gang of kids that come to nice areas as they expect money, "penny for the guy." meaning wanting money for fireworks night.

We just hope it pours down that night
