mosaic
Hi, For the first time since we have had our children, my husband and I are going away for one night only as we managed to get overnight childcare. It will also be my birthday (a special one), so all in all, quite an occasion. Can you think of a nice place to stay in a pretty town near Sheffield, no further than an hour, an hour-and-a-half's drive away? Recommendations are particularly welcome on hotels and good restaurants/pubs for dinner. Our budget for the hotel is £125 tops. We will leave at 2 on a Friday and return at about 2 the next day. This rules out walking in the countryside unfortunately, so I think staying somewhere too rural is not ideal. Equally, somewhere like Manchester is not my cup of tea. Thanks in advance! denlin
Castleton is very nice and you are not compelled to go walking, you could visit the caverns or Matlock - there used to be a horse drawn barge on Cromford Canal - There's also Lincoln. York or Newark all of which have boat trips available

*Twinkle*
Try Whitley Hall hotel, its at Grenoside... Very lovely place, nice grounds with peacocks roaming etc... The food is great and they have a residents bar. No spa or anything though, which is always a nice touch for a weekend away... A little further afield is Mottram Hall, Cheshire. Its just outside Wilmslow. I stayed there with my other half last weekend and couldnt fault the place... It does have a lovely spa too and tennis courts/squash court/gym etc Have a nice time! denlin
Whitley Hall is nice but the food last time I went - which I admit is quite a long time ago - was good but very small portions
gnvqsos
I would plump for Ashbourne;it is nearby but not inundated with Sheffield people so does feel new whereas Castleton etc. can be home from home.Ashbourne is also very tolerant of cross dressers and other minority groups_I put this down to the hunting tradition. Jesamaine
There's a lovely grassy spot just outside Crystal Peaks where you could pitch a tent, good parking too you should get there in good time for a couple of steak bakes from Greggs and you could go to William Hill for some entertainment, just like a cheap night at the casino, then in the morning you could call in at Maccy D's for breakfast how romantic would that be? good luck
