Mister M
What Fine Line didn't mention was that with regards to disciplining children, the Tories under Thatcher stopped schools using physical punishment against children (in 1986, I think). TheSpectre
Bringing back the Cane? Won't happen, there's the HRA which won't let it for a start. Probably not but I think this governent proposal to return school punishment was stated in the papers, just after the recent riots and looting. Harleyman
Totally against any slapping. Our solution to dealing with ours when they stepped out of line was banishment to their bedrooms for a set period.
mj.scuba
Not all violence is discipline though. Sometimes it is nothing more than the loss of control. The kid I know who is smacked the most by his parents is the child who hits his parents back the most. What tosh! There is no evidence to suggest that the child beating debate is split along party lines or that the people who are against it don't have children. If only the handringers who feel their 'rights' are being erroded if they can't hit children, showed the same concern for the widespread child abuse which takes place in this country, then they might be a bit more convincing that they are motivated by the children's welfare, rather than the convenience of using the easiest, laziest way of asserting authority. The one which is most frequently used by child abusers to take out their own frustration under the guise of 'discipline.' Now who is talking tosh? To suggest people who simply don't want the state meddling in how they bring up their children are unconcerned by child abuse is nothing but a smear. Murphy Jnr
Hmm, if the Welsh are banning it, then it might happen in England I suppose! Let's hope that reaches free prescriptions also then

Aye but some are not capable of distinguishing between some light chastisement (currently not criminal) and beating a kid black and blue, breaking bones etc (currenly IS criminal). This is nothing to do with protecting kids imo. It's about one set of people trying to impose their particular brand of parenting on the rest of society. Murphy Jnr
There's a whole generation maybe two that have been bought up with an occasional smack on the arse or back of the leg myself included, wooden spoons in our house. It wasn't regular mainly due to the fear factor (I really didn't want to be smacked) but also respect. Should it be outlawed? Is there a chance that it gives more power to an unsettled child. Could they use it to their advantage. They already take advantage of many laws supposedly in place to protect them.
