extaxman
At the side of the Halifax at the top of Norfolk St there is a side entrance with the name Jessie Bainbridge over it. I've tried Googleing it but just get a lot of rubbish about people on Facebook. Can someone please help me out?
Daven
The building was built in 1893 by Emerson Muschamp Bainbridge(1845-1911). He was the son of the founder of Bainbridges Department Store In Newcastle, trained as a mining engineer and became manager of the Sheffield, Tinsley and Nunnery Collieries in Sheffield. He was a strong supporter of the YMCA and his building at the corner of Norfolk Street and Surrey Street was intended to house a YMCA headquarters. He provided a childrens shelter, the Jeffie Bainbridge Home for Waifs and Strays, which included a dining room and dormatories for homeless children. Emmerson Bainbridges first wife was Eliza Jefferson Armstrong (died 1892) and their daughter was Eva Jeffie Bainbridge. Jeffie was short for Jefferson - a nickname he had for his wife.
