Overtaking a Hearse

Recommended Posts

A hearse containing a coffin on their way to the crematorium or church will drive slowly for the last few hundred yards on the approach to the funeral venue with vehicles containing the breaved relatives and friends following behind. This is as mark of respect and is a tradition which is repected by all decent and caring members of our society.

So everyone that disagrees with you aren’t decent and caring members of our society. That’s an interesting theory.

Slightly off topic, but i have to share this.....I was in a funeral cortège once, and as we were slowly driving towards the Crematorium, a group of huddies who were on BMX type bikes saw us approaching (they were coming towards us but on the path).... as we got to them, all of them stopped their bikes and got off, and stood still till we had passed, i was amazed......it just shows, you should never judge a book by its cover

Why did it surprise you?

Its stereotyping, most of us are guilty of it to some degree, you just build a certain picture of people

Directly passing the hearse and/or deliberatly getting yourself in between the hearse and the vehicle containing the family of the deceased would be considered crass and insensitive by most people.
Many funerals here involve long lines of cars belonging to relatives and friends moving below the speed limit. They are identified by flags on the antennas. If the route includes two lanes, it is OK to pass. But if not, it is courtesy to stay behind the line, because forcing into the line can leave some cars out of sight of the line and unable to find out where to go. In general, people are very considerate, and will wait at a light, if it has changed red, to let the procession continue.

It is the right and proper thing to do in this country.

I started a seperate thread earlier on this subject and included a poll, but it was removed

Just because you say it, doesn't make it true. In your opnion it's the right thing to do, you are your own person. You might think that pouring your drink on the floor as a mark of respect is the right thing to do also, doesn't mean we all have to think that.

There isn't anything technically or legally wrong with it, but theres such a thing as morals and decency, two things you are obviously lacking in if you think its OK to overtake a hearse with a coffin in it.

This forum is the most depressing place to be sometimes. It's just so sad that there are so many people who lack basic morals and decency and are in such a hurry to get to where they're going that they can't hang back and let a funeral procession proceed in a dignified way without screaming past them. And think it's clever to do so and to mock people who still do have a bit of consideration for people who are probably going through one of the worst days of their lives.
