They were fighting to unite the north with the south and get rid of foreigners. They had had a gut full of the French for the better part of a century and they didnt want the Americans there either. Dont ridicule yourself any further by spouting on about "International Socialism" Ho Chi Minh was essentially a Vietnamese nationalist.
