Mattenmurg
http://www.francisfrith.com/sheffield/photos/fargate-and-surrey-street-1893_31961/#utmcsr=google.co.uk&utmcmd=referral&utmccn=google.co.uk Hello I have seen a few photos recently, like the one above, featuring this needle like monument at the top of Fargate where it meets Surry Street. They all tend to be from the late 1800's or veyr early 1900s. I can't seem to find any information on it. What was it marking? When was it erected and why was it removed? Any help appreciated. I'm not originally from Sheffield, just interested in the city I now call home.
